Abstract:

The continuous increase of antibiotics resistance to infections is worrisome; a need to look into the biological potential of some medicinal plants for solution prompted this study. Staphylococcus aureus is known to causes an array of ailments from minor skin ailments to life threatening bacteraemia. Evaluation of the anti-staphylococcal activity of some medicinal plants against isolates of methicillin resistant S. aureus was conducted and Cassine transvaalensis was found to have the lowest MIC of 0.2µl/ml. Further bioactivities study of sequential solvent extracts of C. transvaalensis was conducted. The hexane fraction was the most active.  Column chromatography of the hexane extract afforded two C30 compounds (F1 and F5). Compound F1 was found to be most active against S. aureus as a pure isolated compound. Structural elucidation of the two triterpenoid compounds was done using 1D and 2D-NMR.
